Tips

This is a method to convert images to Black and White in Lab Mode in Photoshop. It is called the Gorman-Holbert method. It is named after Greg Gorman and Mac Holbert. It is easy enough to follow.
Step 1 : I have opened this free stock image. This image can be found here
It belongs to ~AngieStock Angie. 
Step 2 : Go to Image>Mode>Lab Color.
Step 3 : Go to the Channels palette. Click on the Lightness panel.
Step 4 : Go to Image>Mode>Grayscale.
Step 5 : This dialogue box appears. Click OK.
Step 6 : The other channels are discarded. Only the Grayscale channel remains.
The image looks like this.
Step 7 : CTRL+CLICK the Channel thumbnail.
Step 8 : As soon as you CTRL+CLICK, a selection of marching ants selects the shadows automatically.
Step 9 : Press CTRL+SHIFT+I. This inverses the selection
Step 10 : With the selection in place go to Image>Mode>RGB.
Step 11 : Click back on the Layers palette.
Step 12 : Click on Add New Fill or Adjustment Layer button and click on Solid Color.
Step 13 : The Pick a Solid Color dialogue box opens. Click OK.
Step 14 : Change the Blend Mode to Multiply.
This is how the image looks.
Step 15 : Press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E to form a composite layer. It is named Layer1.
Step 16 : Change the Blend Mode to Overlay.
Step 17 : Lower the Opacity to 20%.
Step 18 : Go to Filter>Other>High Pass.
Step 19 : The High Pass dialogue box opens. Set the Radius at 20%. Click OK.
And here is the finished Black and White image.
