Tips

You can add a tan or enrich the colors of an image in a few simple steps in Photoshop (any version). First you will need a photo and basically the Erazer and the Brush Tool. Before proceeding with the tutorial let me show you a quick trick when using the Brush Tool or the Erazer Tool that also behaves like a brush. To make a brush tip soft press CTRL+[ a number of times. To make it hard press CTRL+] a number of times. To make the size of the brush large press ] a couple of times. To make it small press [ a number of times.
Step 1 : This is the image I have opened in Photoshop.
Step 2 : Look at the Layers pallette. The photo is the Background Layer. Now press the Add Layer button shown by the small white hand and a New Layer1 pops up.
Step 3 : Go to Edit>Fill.

Step 4 : This dialogue box opens. From the drop down Menu in 'Use' click on Color. Click ok.

Step 5 : The Choose a Color dialogue box opens. Note the column of layers in the middle. It is called the Spectrum. Note that there is a slider at the bottom. Pushing the slider up or down will change the color in the display box at the left. I have dragged the slider to an orange color, then clicked on a shade of orange in the display box at left. Click ok.

Step 6 : This is how the image looks. It has been filled with the chosen color.

Step 7 : Click where the white arrow points to in the Layers pallete to change the Blend Mode, which is by default set to Normal.
The Blend Mode is set to Color Burn.

Step 8 : Now lower the Opacity. I have lowered it to 60%. There is nothing hard and fast about it. You can lower it even to 40%. It will depend on your image and what you think looks good to you.
This is how my image looks.
Step 9 : Click on the Zoom Tool.
Step 10 : I have zoomed into the image so that I can see the eyes clearly.
Step 11 : Click on the Erazer Tool. It works just like a brush. Soften it as explained at the start of this tutorial.
Step 12 : The Foreground Color is set Black by default and Background to White. Click the small bent arrow to make the Foreground Color White. If your Forground and Background Colors are not set to the default Black and White, press 'x' and then 'd'.
Step 13 : I am now erazing the fill with the Erazer . The eyes are now white as it should be. Do likewise with the other eye.
Step 14 : Now use the Erazer Tool on the teeth to whiten them.
Step 15 : Click the Add New Layer Button and a new Layer 2 forms.
Step 16 : Click the Brush Tool. Remember you must soften it first.
Step 17 : Click the Forground Color. It does not matter what color it is.
Step 18 : The Color Picker opens. You must use it just as you did with 'Choose a Color' in Step 4. By default it shows the Reds first. Here we actually need the reds. Click on a bright red shade. we will need it for the color of the lipstick. Click ok.
Step 19 : Now paint the lips using a soft brush.
Step 20 : The lips have been painted Red. But it looks odd does it not? It does not look quite right.
Step 21 : Lower the Opacity of Layer 2 suitably. You can lower to between 70% to 50% or which looks right to you. You decide.
An here is your enriched color or tanned image.

You can use a different fill color to get some other effects like this. Just follow all the other steps as well.
